The Toyota Hilux is a popular pick up on UK roads. Built for heavy use, buyers often choose it for towing, site work, farming or mixed family and business duties. In the used market, it competes with the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi L200 [1].

However, what appears to set the Toyota Hilux apart is its reliability profile, as demonstrated by its Overall Reliability Score of 78.4/100 in our latest Reliability Index dataset. This places it firmly as a lower-risk pick-up truck option, based on recorded repair data.

Many Hilux’s are registered as light commercial vehicles, which can affect taxation and Benefit-in-Kind treatment depending on usage [2]. Most examples on sale have worked for a living, so condition and service history matter more than age alone.

While running costs can be higher than regular passenger cars, repair patterns are often more predictable, particularly for well-maintained examples.

What our data suggests about used Toyota Hilux reliability:

Based on our historical repair data, the Toyota Hilux takes 6th place on our Most Reliable list. It offers relatively predictable ownership, particularly when compared with more complex pickup trucks. Most repair requests tend to occur after models are well over seven years old, rather than early in the model’s lifespan.

The most regular repair requests relate to the clutch, which is consistent with modern pickups that sustain prolonged, heavier use [3]. The Hilux reports the second highest average repair costs of the 10 models on our Most Reliable list (£1,436.72).  This is something for owners to be mindful of when comparing it with the average repair cost of other vehicles in the list. For example, the Toyota Aygo records an average repair cost of £480.64.

The difference reflects vehicle type and usage rather than quality. The Hilux is a larger, ladder-frame pick-up designed for towing and load carrying. Parts are heavier and labour times can be longer. By contrast, the Aygo is a lightweight city car with simpler mechanical demands.

So, while both models sit in the Top 10 most reliable list overall, the potential repair spend profile is materially different. Buyers should assess affordability in line with vehicle size, purpose and expected usage.

The Hilux has a long-standing reputation for durability, although ownership outcomes depend heavily on usage history. Usage history matters greatly – vehicles that have regularly towed, carried heavy loads or operated off-road will experience different repair patterns than lightly used lifestyle models.

Why reliability can vary between Hilux models:

While the Toyota Hilux is often associated with dependable ownership, reliability is never guaranteed. Factors that can influence repair likelihood include:

  • Servicing and maintenance history: Having your car serviced and maintained at the manufacturer’s specified intervals can reduce repair likelihood.
  • Mileage and driving style: Accelerate gently, avoid harsh braking and try to maintain steady speeds.
  • Urban use versus longer motorway journeys: Frequent, short trips (where the car’s engine never reaches full operating temperature) can increase stress on starter motors, reduce battery life and cause increased wear on various engine components [4].
  • Previous owners and care standards: Insist on a full-service history and try to investigate previous owners’ care for the car.
  • Hybrid vs petrol powertrains: Hybrid Hilux models, for example, introduce additional electrical components [5] that may alter long-term repair patterns, while higher-mileage examples may naturally face wear-related repairs sooner.

Our reliability data is best used as a guideline, not a guarantee. Two identical Hilux models can perform very differently depending on how they’ve been looked after.

What people love about the Toyota Hilux:

People love the Toyota Hilux for its legendary toughness, reliability and off-road capability. It handles rough terrain and heavy work with ease, offers strong resale value and feels dependable in all conditions. Practical, rugged and built to last – a favourite for both work and adventure.

Owners often choose the Hilux for its dependability and capability rather than comfort or technology.

Commonly valued strengths include:

  • Strong reputation for long-term durability.
  • Excellent towing and load-carrying ability.
  • Proven diesel engines, suited to high mileage.
  • Confidence in tough or rural driving conditions.

For many buyers, the Hilux is chosen as a working tool first and a vehicle second.

Toyota Hilux safety:

The Toyota Hilux received a three-star Euro NCAP safety rating (2016) with standard equipment [6]. This rating has since expired but still provides useful context for structural safety performance at the time of assessment.

Double-cab versions provide ISOFIX mounting points and improved rear-seat usability, making them suitable for mixed work-and-family use.

How much does a used Toyota Hilux cost?

Used prices vary significantly depending on age, mileage, cab type and specification, but typical UK market ranges include:

Vehicle age  Typical mileage  Price range
3–5 years old  Under 50k miles  £22,000 – £30,000
5–7 years old  Under 70k miles  £16,000 – £24,000
7-9 years old  Under 90k miles £12,000 – £18,000

Prices will vary depending on age, mileage, spec and general condition. Price ranges from Autotrader, March 2026. Prices subject to change.

Buyers should consider not just purchase price, but how the vehicle has been used and maintained, particularly if it has spent much of its life working.

In 2025, the RAC reported that two-thirds (65%) of drivers have had to fork out for unexpected car repair costs in the last year [7] – up from 59% last year.

With an average Hilux repair cost at £1,437, it’s important to be confident your budget can accommodate potential repair work over time.

Is the Toyota Hilux a sensible used buy?

The Toyota Hilux may be a good fit if:

  • You need strong towing or load-carrying capability.
  • You value durability over luxury.
  • You expect high mileage or demanding use.
  • You choose a vehicle with a clear usage and service history.

Things you may wish to consider:

  • Running costs are higher than typical cars.
  • Ride comfort is firmer than SUVs or vans.

As with any vehicle, long-term ownership experience depends on condition, maintenance and how the vehicle has been used.

Warranty considerations:

The Toyota Hilux scores well on our Reliability Index. Known for its durability and strong reputation for reliability, the Hilux is built to handle the demanding conditions. However, if repairs are needed, our data shows the average repair request can reach £1,436.

Warrantywise plans start from just £54 per month for the Hilux, helping you to budget for unexpected repair costs. (Prices may vary depending on your specific warranty plan).

If explored, it’s sensible to:

  • Understand what is and isn’t included in the warranty plan
  • Treat it as a budgeting tool rather than a guarantee
  • Balance the cost against mileage, usage and repair exposure

A warranty should support informed ownership planning, not replace thorough inspections or regular maintenance.

Data note: This overview uses historical repair request data as one part of a broader ownership picture. It does not guarantee whether any individual vehicle will or will not experience repair issues. Vehicle reliability is influenced by many factors, including maintenance, usage and condition at the time of purchase. These aspects should always be considered alongside professional inspections and service records.
